Last night was family dinner night. There was lively discussion about how hilarious The Office was, Christian Bale's meltdown, Michael Phelps adventures with weed, the wonders of hulu, and the fact that our dogs are now friends on dogbook. (I kid you not.) After everyone headed home I was thinking about all the things that I learn on Wednesday nights. It is so much darn fun to sit and listen to all the opinions and laughter and I was reminded of a Wednesday night not too long ago that I learned the importance of lightening up now and then.
We were sitting around laughing about something and I heard someone mention Achmed the dead terrorist. As you are all well aware, I am a teensy bit sensitive about war, guns, people who shoot guns, things that lead to wars, people who start wars, people who argue a lot, arguing in general, war in general, guns in general, terrorists......pacifism is often a heavy burden to carry. :-) My kids quickly explain that Achmed (A-c-phlegm-h-m-e-d) is one of many characters created by Jeff Dunham. I'm thinking, holy cow, some nut thinks terroism is funny, and I say so. I am assured that Achmed is a rather messed up terroist and I will enjoy him. Uh....right. There is nothing funny about a guy who blows people up.
As it turns out, there is. Being an open minded pacifist, I look up Jeff Dunham on youtube and watch each and every Achmed video. This one is a good place to start. Peeps, I haven't laughed so darn hard in ages. I laughed until I had hiccups. I laughed until I cried and then I laughed some more. Who in the heck knew that "Silence! I kill you!" was funny? Poor skeletal Achmed, who insists he isn't dead, is afraid of Walter (another of Jeff Dunham's cast of characters), and can't keep his feet going in the right direction, is freaking hilarious. Jeff Dunham's ventriloquist skills are amazing, as his is quick mind and timely humor. If you haven't already had the pleasure, look him up. The holiday special is especially funny.
Lesson? It's ok to have feel strongly about peace, but once in awhile, a girl has to lighten up.
I like to think it's always good to have an informed opinion ... :)
