I am not a beach sort of girl. That probably makes me rather odd (oh, don't act all surpris
ed), but when planning vacations, Amazing Husband and I look for the coolest climate and choose the time period to be when the fewest amount of people will be there. We have hit on all of that and so much more here in fabulous northern Minnesota. To the right is the view from our balcony window. Yes, it's raining, but we are ever so pleased. All this rain makes for breathtaking water falls, but more on that later.
Yesterday, after a delicious breakfast at a local cafe we walked the streets of town for a bit and then head out toward the Canadian border driving roads like these where there was beauty in every direction. After stopping for lunch at the Grand Portage Casino (no gambling, though) we reached our destination at Grand Portage State Park and enjoyed th
e easy 1/2 mile hike to heart stopping views of this water fall. (remember that you can click on the photos to see them larger) I can't possibly find the words to describe the power of these falls. When we visited a year ago this part of Minnesota was suffering a serious drought and the only water flowing was a small fall in the center of the rock. (You can read about that visit here.) We were incredibly lucky to find things much different this year. We ended the day with a wonderful dinner at one of our favorite places, The Crooked Spoon accompanied by a lovely red wine. (Ancient Vines Red Zinfandel Cline, 2006) Such a perfect day.
Time spent here is always, always as nearly perfect as I can imagine. Last night a thunder storm came across that lake and AH and I lay in bed and listened to the thunder mix with the sound of the crashing surf right outside our bedroom window. Our room has a kitchen with a fridge that has ice and water in the door. The bathroom has a tub big enough for two, and the fireplace is both in the living and bed rooms. When we check in the people at the desk remember us and greet us like friends. There is even pizza delivery to the door. I LOVE vacation!
Ohhhhh...it looks SO beautiful there in Minnesota! I want to see the rest of the pictures when you return. (I also want you to take me with you! :-) Enjoy, enjoy! (It sounds like you are too!)
I am enjoying CA pleasant weather and flowers (roses, jasmine and bougandilia (sp?) and visiting with family and friends of course. A nice relaxing vacation.
So glad you can send a piece of your vacation to us through your blog!
